I have been on this site for about a week now, and have looked at a lot of profiles. I've noticed many people haven't logged in for 3 months or more, which seems to indicate they are no longer active on the site. Why can't they just delete their account if they want to leave, have become involved in a relationship, etc., so active members don't get discouraged sending emails and messages to someone who will probably never read it? Is there any kind of policy where an account is automatically deleted if someone does not log in, say, after 6 months or 1 year?

About two years ago we wrote the programming code to delete all accounts that had not had any activity in over a year.
Before we ran it, we decided to do a test, where we logged all logins by accounts that had not been active in over a year...and we were shocked at how many people log back into accounts everyday (after having not been active for lengthy amounts of time...specifically not active for a minimum of a year).
Since the network now has several million profiles, there are a LOT of people out there who have participated in the network at some point, whether they are active now or not.
We do have procedures in place regarding the deletion of inactive accounts, but they aren't as cut and dry as just deleting accounts automatically after a certain amount of time.
Since we began sending out email newsletters with announcements of new features, we have seen significant changes in activity...with people logging back into their accounts in fairly large numbers after each email.
With all that being said, we do delete about 30% of all registrations in the network, and a portion of the accounts deleted are deleted specifically due to inactivity.
Sorry not to give out the specifics of how all of this works, but we did want to explain that we do look at these things, and we are working on ways to increase activity...and ways to weed out / delete abandoned accounts.
We would recommend that members put their time and attention towards members who show as having been active within the last 3 months.
The search system automatically displays members (in part) based on when they last logged in.
Hope that information helps explain things a little,
.
