Vampire T.V Shows and films

Just out of curiosity, what is the fascination for all the vampires, zombies, etc., these days? Seems like there is a new vampire movie or TV show every week, zombie-killing video games, and so on. The whole genre seems rather morbid and dark, much like horror movies. Our whole culture is becoming more and more dark, occult, death-oriented and morally destitute, and a lot of the mind-sucking garbage coming out of Hollywood today can be blamed for a lot of it, in my opinion. I was just wondering what some other people here think about it.
